A COVERED VILLAGE FOR SENIOR LIVING
Senior Coliving proposes a new residential model for later-life living, shaped around independence, community and everyday dignity. The project moves away from the institutional language of traditional care environments and develops the idea of a covered village: a low-rise collection of domestic-scaled living units connected by a generous glazed galleria.
At the centre of the proposal is the internal street. More than a corridor, the galleria becomes the social and climatic heart of the project: a protected route for walking, meeting and orientation, but also a shared interior landscape. In climates defined by rain, soft daylight and long interior seasons, this covered street gives residents a year-round place to move, pause and remain connected to the life of the community.
The residential units are conceived as recognizable houses rather than rooms along an anonymous passage. Each unit has its own threshold, a clear identity and a direct relationship to planted courtyards. This organization reduces institutional scale and creates a more legible environment, where daily routines can unfold with calm and familiarity.
Materiality plays a central role in the project. Warm timber surfaces, transparent partitions, soft natural light and garden views create an atmosphere closer to a home than a facility. The architecture is deliberately quiet: it supports care, orientation and social contact without becoming clinical or over-designed.
Landscape is treated as part of the residential structure. Courtyards, planted edges and sheltered outdoor rooms bring seasonal change into everyday life, while offering privacy, activity and retreat. The result is a senior living environment where architecture, interiors and landscape work together to support dignity, wellbeing and community.
Senior Coliving is an architectural proposal for a more humane model of later-life living: clear, social, climate-aware and rooted in the rituals of everyday life.
