Varvakeios Square

USE: Landscape-Redesign of the Varvakeios Market square in the Historical Center of Athens
LOCATION: Athens, Greece
STATUS: Unbuilt
COLLABORATORS: F. Mylona, R. Antoniadis

In the heart of the city lies Varvakeios Square, a space marked by potential yet overshadowed by challenges. Known for its vibrant arcades and rooftops, the area has long been a hub for social interaction, but in recent years, it has faced significant issues with safety, particularly at night. This project seeks to breathe new life into the square, transforming it into a dynamic, inclusive, and secure space for Athenians and visitors alike.

At the core of the design is the concept of interweaving two planes, creating a fluid connection between the physical and social aspects of the site. Drawing inspiration from the region’s architectural and cultural identity—its arcades, rooftops, and vibrant social fabric—the design reimagines the square as a place that invites exploration, interaction, and visual engagement.

The process began with a careful mapping of the site’s unique features. By identifying critical elements, such as the existing social hubs and architectural details, the design balances innovation with preservation. The goal was to introduce new possibilities for interaction while maintaining the area’s distinctive character.

A key focus of the design is the creation of a multi-layered, open terrain that fosters visual connections and encourages a sense of discovery. This approach aims to revive the square’s social life, drawing people into a space where Athenians and tourists alike can gather, interact, and share experiences.

Ultimately, the vision for Varvakeios Square goes beyond aesthetics. It seeks to establish a landscape that adapts to the cultural, economic, and ecological demands of the region. By integrating public spaces, green areas, and adaptable infrastructure, the project redefines the square as a place of resilience and connection—a hub where urban life can thrive once more.
