El Pilar

USE: Urban regeneration/Residential and public spaces
LOCATION: Madrid, Spain
STATUS: Unbuilt

This project focuses on revitalizing a large urban block in Madrid’s El Pilar neighborhood. Currently characterized by underutilized public spaces, impermeable layouts, and inadequate housing conditions, the block requires a transformative approach to address issues of accessibility, safety, and community engagement. The proposal reimagines the block by redistributing commercial activity, enhancing green spaces, introducing cultural and social amenities, and improving residential conditions. Through these strategies, the project aims to create a more vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive urban environment.

Strategy through a central ring

Redistributing Commercial Activity: Moving shops to a central ground-level ring improves access to the interior and activates public spaces.

Enhancing Green and Public Spaces: A central green area with plazas and a forest zone provides recreational opportunities and ecological benefits.

Adding Social and Cultural Amenities: An elevated central ring houses social and cultural facilities, connecting the block and creating new views.

Improving Housing Conditions: New north-south-oriented housing with solar panels ensures better lighting, ventilation, and energy efficiency, while the structure expands existing patios.

Efficient Structural Design: Metal trusses support the elevated ring, integrating new functions without disrupting the block’s fabric.

This approach transforms the block into a dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable urban space tailored to the community’s needs.
